East Coast Storm Brings Snow, Rain, and Damaging Winds

Share

It wasn’t a quiet start to the weekend. February 16, 2025, arrived with a storm that made sure of that. Snow, freezing rain, and powerful winds ripped through parts of the East Coast, making roads dangerous and knocking out power for thousands.

Snow, Then Ice, Then a Lot of Rain

Early in the day, Lehigh Valley saw several inches of snow, covering roads and sidewalks in a thick layer of white. Pretty, for a while. But temperatures didn’t stay cold enough, and by midday, the snow turned into a slushy mix of sleet and freezing rain. That’s when the real trouble started.

Philadelphia got mostly rain—a steady downpour that lasted for hours. In some areas, drainage systems couldn’t keep up, and streets started flooding. Cars struggled through deep puddles, and some drivers had no choice but to abandon their vehicles.

Winds Tear Through Cities, Leaving Thousands Without Power

The storm wasn’t just about what fell from the sky. Gusts reaching 50 mph swept through Washington, D.C., Maryland, and parts of Virginia. Trees came down, power lines snapped, and by nightfall, thousands of homes were in the dark.

Utility crews worked through the night, but with high winds continuing, repairs weren’t easy. Officials warned that some areas could remain without electricity for days.

Airports, Highways, and Trains—Nothing Spared

If you had travel plans, chances are you had to change them. Flight cancellations stacked up at Philadelphia International and Reagan National, with airlines delaying trips due to poor visibility and dangerous wind conditions.

Amtrak trains weren’t spared either. Icy tracks and debris on rail lines forced delays along the Northeast Corridor, leaving passengers stuck in stations for hours. Highways weren’t much better—several accidents were reported, and in some places, officials urged drivers to stay off the roads altogether.

Another Storm on the Way?

As this system moves out, meteorologists are already watching another one forming. More cold air, more precipitation, and another round of difficult travel conditions could be ahead.

For now, residents across the East Coast are cleaning up, drying out, and hoping the next round of winter weather isn’t as disruptive.
