Presidents Day 2025: What’s Open and What’s Closed

Share

Presidents Day is here again! This year, the holiday falls on Monday, February 17, 2025, giving many people a much-needed long weekend. Originally meant to honor George Washington, it has evolved into a day recognizing all U.S. presidents. But let’s be honest—most people know it as a time for big sales, time off work, or just an excuse to sleep in.

Of course, like any federal holiday, it also means some businesses and services will have different hours. So, if you’re planning to run errands or get things done, here’s what you need to know.

Banks and Mail Services

Need to visit your bank? If it’s Monday, you’re out of luck—most banks will be closed for the holiday. But don’t worry, ATMs and online banking will still be available.

If you were hoping to send or receive mail, that’s another no-go. USPS won’t be delivering regular mail, and post offices will be closed all day. However, FedEx and UPS will still be running, but with some modified services depending on the type of delivery.

Stock Market and Government Offices

For those keeping an eye on the markets, both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will be closed, meaning no trading until Tuesday. Bond markets will also be taking a break.

Government offices? Same story. Federal buildings, DMVs, and courthouses will be closed, so don’t expect to get your paperwork done that day.

Stores, Restaurants, and Schools

The good news? If you need to go shopping, most major stores, malls, and supermarkets will be open, and many will be running big Presidents Day sales. So, if you’ve been eyeing that new TV or mattress, this might be the perfect time to snag a deal.

Restaurants, coffee shops, and fast-food chains will also be open as usual, though some smaller, locally owned spots might adjust their hours.

School schedules vary by district, but many public schools and universities will take the day off. It’s always a good idea to double-check if you’re not sure.

A Holiday with History and Deals

Beyond the shopping and extra day off, Presidents Day is a chance to reflect on the country’s history and leadership. Whether you spend the day relaxing, traveling, or hitting the sales, now you know what to expect before heading out.
